Brazilian Visa Policy

Student Visa (Temporary Visa IV)

The Student Visa (temporary visa IV/VITEM IV) can be granted for of up to 365 days of stay in Brazil, for students accepted or enrolled in undergraduate or graduate courses recognized by the Ministry of Education (MEC) in Brazil. Beneficiaries of VITEM IV may not take employment in Brazil.

The Student visa must be requested with the Brazilian consular services abroad. The necessary documentation to visa application depends on the applicant’ country of origin. Applicants must contact the nearest consular office to learn about the requirements in their country.

In general, the requested documentation includes, at least:

  • Form filled out and signed in two counterparts;
  • Passport;
  • Statement from the Brazilian Education Institution stating that the applicant has been accepted or is enrolled in the desired course;
  • Term of Financial Responsibility issued by the relevant body, in case of scholarship student, or by the person responsible for the student;
  • Parental consent, if under age;
  • Police clearance certificate;
  • Proof of means of transport for entry and exit from the Brazilian territory.

Visa Extension

The Temporary Visa IV authorizes foreigners to attend a particular course in a specific educational institution and may be valid for up to one year (according to letter of acceptance). It may also be extended for an equal period, several times, for the duration of the course. The visa extension must be applied with the Federal Police Department or the General Protocol of the Ministry of Justice, within 30 (thirty) days before the end of the stay. The documentation required to apply for the visa extension is:

  • Application form, available at https://servicos.dpf.gov.br/sincreWeb/
  • Two recent, colorful 3/4” picture, with a white background;
  • Clear and full certified copy of the passport or equivalent valid travel document;
  • Proof of temporary registration;
  • Enrollment guarantee (except in case of completed courses and if the foreigner is requesting time to pick-up the diploma);
  • Statement from the educational institution describing their course duration (except in case of completed course and if the foreigner is requesting time to pick-up the diploma);
  • Original proof of payment of the respective fees.
