Furniss confident swimmers will be race ready for Rio 2016

28/07/2016

Head coach Bill Furniss insists nothing will be left to chance as Team GB's swimmers prepare to star at Rio 2016.

The majority of British swimmers have already touched down in Brazil ahead of next month's Olympic Games and are now based at the Team GB holding camp in Belo Horizonte.

They will spent the next week acclimatising to the environment in Brazil at the university pool at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais while sharpening their focus towards the Olympic swimming programme which begins on August 6.

Four years ago, Team GB picked up three podium finishes in London with the now retired Rebecca Adlington winning double bronze and Michael Jamieson taking home 200m breaststroke bronze.

Hopes are high for an improved showing this time around with a host of swimmers, such as Adam Peaty and James Guy, having won medals on a global stage in recent years.

And Furniss revealed the team is doing everything possible to peak at the right time.

"By the time they arrive in Rio we know they will be race ready," Furniss told British Swimming.

"We've designed the camp schedule around achieving this and it's put our athletes into a very positive place as they adjust their sights to the starting blocks of their very first event.

"We're trying to make the whole experience as normal as possible. We've been working on that over the past three years to ensure they approach every competition with the same mindset.

"We want to make sure that over the next few days they achieve that state of readiness to achieve their potential and deliver the right outcome."
